Getting onto the sand.

The Town lends beach wheelchairs for free, and its map marks five beach accesses as handicap accessible. Here is how the loan works and where those accesses are.

How the Town's loan works.

  1. First come, first served, free. Loans are for up to 3 days. Bring a valid driver's license.
  2. Weekdays: Planning & Inspections at Town Hall, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, 910-579-3469.
  3. Weekends: Sundays only. No rentals on Saturdays. For a Sunday chair, call or visit the Police Department before 4:30 pm on Friday to set a time: 910-579-4221.
  4. Pick up and drop off at the Community Center, 44 E. First St. The Town doesn't deliver to homes, and the chair can't leave the island.
Check your vehicle first: the chair is 36" wide, 49" long and 48" tall. The Town says it won't fit in a car or small SUV. Use a truck bed, a large SUV or a trailer, and never tow it behind a golf cart.
Beach mats: the Town's pages don't mention beach mats, so we don't list any. Battery-powered wheelchairs are allowed on the strand; other motor vehicles are not.

Listed west to east, as marked on the Town's interactive parking and beach-access map. Monroe St. is next door to the Community Center, where the wheelchairs and restrooms are.

On the sound side: the Town map also marks the Ferry Landing Park waterway access as handicap accessible. The Town says the park and its pier reopened at the end of 2024, with free parking for park use. It's on the Things to Do page.
